What is Afternoon Tea?

The tradition of Afternoon Tea was first observed by the English aristocracy in the 17th century.  Although we often refer to this tradition as High Tea today, in fact High Tea was the dinner meal for service personnel in the those days.  Shingle Inn’s Afternoon Tea is served on an elegant three-tier stand that is ceremoniously brought to the table to celebrate the special indulgence of this occasion.  Details of the Afternoon Tea menu can be found here, and make sure you leave room for this superb array of delicious treats.

What time is Afternoon Tea?

There are Afternoon Tea (High Tea)-specific seating times at daily at 2.30pm as well as at 11.30am on the weekends, however, you can also order Afternoon Tea (High Tea) now as part of the lunch menu.

Do you cater for gluten free?

Yes, Shingle Inn offers a wide selection of gluten free cakes and sweet treats and also has gluten free bread available.  If you’re booking for Afternoon Tea, please let us know in advance of your dietary requirements, however, if you’re visiting for coffee and cake or lunch we always have gluten free options readily available.

Can we book a large group?

Yes. We welcome large bookings and will do our best to accommodate all your needs. If you are arranging a booking for a large group to enjoy morning tea, lunch or coffee and cake, please contact the store directly on +61 7 3210 2904. If you’re arranging a group of Afternoon Tea for a bridal or baby shower or would like to arrange a private function during the week or after hours, please contact Brand Manager Louise Bellchambers on +61 7 3399 3000 (extension 13).

What access is there for wheelchairs?

Shingle Inn City Hall is easily accessible for wheelchairs.  The closest car park is at King George Square, accessible via Roma Street, with lift access to King George Square.  Enter Brisbane City Hall via King George Square, turn right and keep going past the lifts on your left until you reach Shingle Inn.  We are able to accommodate wheelchairs both inside the restaurant and in the foyer seating area.  To avoid disappointment, please let us know your requirements at the time of booking so we can ensure we assign you the most appropriate table for your needs.

Where are you?

Shingle Inn City Hall is located on the ground floor of Brisbane’s City Hall.  Enter from King George Square, turn right and walk past the lifts until you reach Shingle Inn.  Our address is Shingle Inn City Hall, King George Square, Brisbane Queensland 4000, however, please direct any postal correspondence to PO Box 7067, East Brisbane Q 4169 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Where is the best place to park?

King George Square carpark, accessible via Roma Street, is the closest carpark, although the city has many to offer.  Queens Plaza, Myer Centre and Wintergarden are all within walking distance of Shingle Inn City Hall and will enable you to take in the buzz of the city as you walk the short distance to Brisbane City Hall.

How far in advance do I have to book?

A minimum of 24 hours notice is requested for all Afternoon Tea bookings. Online bookings are taken up until midnight of the preceeding day. You may be able to secure a booking by phoning the restaurant after this time, however, to avoid disappointment we do suggest you try and book 24 hours in advance.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Full pre-payment is required for all Afternoon Tea bookings.  If you are booking for a group for Afternoon Tea, for example for a bridal shower, we will happily contact all of your guests to arrange pre-payment individually if you are able to supply contact details for each person at least 10 days prior to the booking. A deposit may be required at other times if you are booking a large group.

Why do I have to pre-pay for Afternoon Tea?

Our on-site chef and pastry chef hand-make the scones and decadent sweet treats for our Afternoon Tea on-site each day.  Due to the time it takes to prepare these items it’s important that all our Afternoon Tea bookings are paid for prior to each sitting.  We do allow for some additional customers to arrive unannounced, however, arranging pre-payment allows us to ensure minimum food wastage.

Do you cater to vegetarians?

We have a number of vegetarian meals on our menu and are always happy to provide specific details for customers on stringent diets. It’s always helpful to know in advance if you have very specific requirements, however, if your diet requirement is simply that you don’t eat meat our quiche, vegetarian ravioli, frittata or vegetarian sandwich will undoubtedly tempt you.

What’s the significance of Shingle Inn City Hall’s sugar bowls?

Shingle Inn City Hall’s original sugar bowls play a special role in the service and tradition within Brisbane’s oldest and most loved café.

With a variety of café names stamped on them, including Shingle Inn, Websters, Renoir and Yorktown (all cafes that were owned by the Webster or Bellchambers families or both), the sugar bowls are turned once an order at each table has been taken. When the service team looks down the row of booths they can easily see which, if any, tables require assistance.

“We hear lots of stories from customers who now visit Shingle Inn as adults, telling us how, as children, they’d cheekily turn the bowls back to gain the attention of the waitress. They’re such happy memories that we’re honoured to be a part of,” says co-Director Andrew Bellchambers.

Can I order a cake from Shingle Inn City Hall?

Yes.  We have a wide variety of whole cakes for sale each day.  You can select to enjoy a special occasion cake in-store with your Afternoon Tea or you can arrange to collect a cake to take away, either with a Happy Birthday ‘plaque’ or with a unique inscription.  Pre-payment is required for all special order cakes and a minimum of 48 hours notice is required for specific messages.  Please contact our friendly team on +61 3210 2904 to discuss your requirements.
